Philosophy

Members of the noesis.com community deserve an intelligent, engaging interaction experience. This list presents guidelines to keep in mind when designing for our users. (in progress...)
  • Focus on content. Present content in beautiful, highly visual ways. All stats, metrics and similar data is expected to be visualized in a rich environment as often as possible. Long blocky paragraphs of text are to be avoided.
  • Avoid clutter. Simplicity retains the user's focus on their defined task.
  • Flatten front end hierarchy. Use enhanced interaction to minimize multi-page drill downs. Users should be able to get anywhere they need to go in one or two (at-most) levels in.
  • Retain visual stability. Keep user oriented to their story/tasks by only updating the areas of the user interface that need it. Minimize full-screen draws as often as possible.
  • Enable users to snip/share/socialize everything.
  • Enable users a level of customization. Examples include drag-n-drop dashboard in their account; filters and sort-bys on as much content as possible.
  • Provide instructions. Don't make the user guess.
  • Build help seamlessly into the site. Hints, tooltips and other devices should be used to help users as they go. Strive to balance it to be there when they need it without asking; but never in the way.
  • Capture everything. People should have confidence that their work/information is always preserved unless they explicitly cancel or delete it.
  • Design with the future in mind. Create designs easily adaptable for touchscreen, smaller portable screens and other future technologies.
  • Customize the experience to the device. Take advantage of available capabilities to enable enhanced interaction.
